Gina's hot idea to cool you down - cold, creamy cheesecake by the slice

Anita Williams - Thursday, July 22, 2010

Gina's Creative Cakes is a great place to drop by when you're shopping in downtown Winnsboro.  And while the summer heat seems to be turned up, Gina is serving up her creamy, signature chilled cheesecake by the slice to cool things down.

So take a break and enjoy!  Gina, creative soul that she is, will surprise you with one of her favorite flavors.  Which flavors she makes on a given day is decided when she arrives at work.  Don't be shy.  Every flavor - vanilla, strawberry and peanut butter being only three of the many possiblities - is delicious.

You're invited to an old fashioned kettle fish fry at Tinney Chapel

Anita Williams - Friday, June 18, 2010

Tinney Chapel is at it again.  And by "it" I mean whipping up some good Southern food and opening their doors to anyone who'd enjoy a great meal and terrific music.  We were at Tinney Chapel for the Easter Sunrise Service and breakfast and I can say without reservation, these folks know how to cook and entertain with country charm.

Here's your official invitation for tomorrow's event. . .

An old-fashioned iron kettle fish fry fundraiser is the centerpiece event in an evening of fun and fellowship

5:00 pm & 7:00 p.m., Saturday, June 19,
at the Family Life Center of
Tinney Chapel United Methodist Church
two miles south of Winnsboro on FM 312,
then east one-quarter mile on CR 4620.

The Pleasant Mountain Boys Southern Gospel Band, of Mt. Pleasant, TX, will provide entertainment. Check them out at: www.pleasantmountainboys.com

“Delta catfish with all the trimmings: fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, iced tea and a choice of homemade desserts is our menu,” says event chairman Bob Deitering. “The chief cook is Bobby Thompson, and desserts will be provided by the Ladies
Group, and other volunteers, of Tinney Chapel UMC.

“The public is invited, and donations or love offerings will be gratefully accepted toward Tinney Chapel’s broad range of ministries,” explains Deitering.

Y'all come!

Hello. My Name is City Kitty.

Anita Williams - Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Hello.

My name is City Kitty and I am brand new here.  I was borned just a few weeks ago.  When Mommy took us for a walk, I got lost.  I could not find my Mommy or sisters or bruvers anywhere.

I was so scared and lonely.   I am not old enuff to be away from my Mommy yet.

Whal I was trying to find my fambly, I wandered into the middle of a street and got so afraid I could not move.

Then a nice man in a Winnsboro city truck stopped right where I was, got out and picked me up.  I found out his name was Mr. Mark and I was so glad he found me.

Miss Nina and all the ladies at City Hall were real nice to me.  Miss Nina took me home wif her becuuuz she loves cats.  But the City Hall ladies asked if I could come back and stay wif them.

So now my home is City Hall.  When I came back they decided to call me City Kitty.  I like that name.

There are fun places to play and hide here.  I have lots of toys like pencils and staplers and paper.  And sometimes feet.

I spend a lot of time with Miss Vickie in her office.  Sometimes I excape and run into the City Council room.  OOoo. There are lots of hiding places there.

I'm not bery good at typing yet and I am still a little cat so I don know how to spell real good ether.

Miss Vickie does not know I saw how she turns on her compooter.  When everyone goes home sometime I can type a note to you so you know what is going on here.

I think I like Winnsboro bery much.  People are nice and kind here, even to litl kittens who get lost.

Will you be my frend?

Your new frend,

City Kitty

Shopping Cart Drill Team to "fill the cart" for the new community food pantry

Anita Williams - Monday, June 14, 2010

By now you've probably heard all about the Winnsboro Merchants Shopping Cart Drill Team, which had its debut last month during 3rd Friday.

The video of the choreographed routine is still on Art & Espresso's facebook page.

This month the Drill Team will be performing at the Depot, Saturday at 2:00 pm and on Market Street at 5:30 pm.

In addition to having a lot of fun, the Drill Team will be collecting donations for the Winnsboro Community Resource Center/Centralized Food Pantry.  Expect to see them on Main Street gathering the donated food on Friday (not Saturday as previously reported).

According to Gus Gustafson, the Team will walk their loaded carts over to the Resource Center at 115 W. Broadway.

Non-perishable items are needed at the new Food Pantry:
  • Canned juice
  • Peanut butter/jellies
  • Bread items
  • Staples
  • Mixed veggies
  • Newborn baby cereals, etc.
You can bring your donation to either performance or drop it off at Art & Espresso ahead of time.

This is a wonderful way to have fun and help benefit local families.

Have a heart. Help fill a cart.

The first CRAZE DAZE event! June 17-19, 2010 in Winnsboro, Texas

Anita Williams - Saturday, June 12, 2010

This is the first CRAZY DAYS event and it is HOT! HOT! HOT!

Some merchants are selling select products at cost.  Others have some giveaways or other fun surprises.  Winnsboro has a very compact downtown, so it’s easy to stroll from one participating merchant to another.  CRAZY DAZE runs from Thursday-Saturday, June 17-19.

3rd Friday means there will be artists selling their pieces from their booths outside the historic Depot.  You never know whether there will be paintings, sculpture, jewelry or performance art.  3rd Friday is on Friday and Saturday.

Some of the merchants have gotten together and created something that is part performance art and part CRAZY DAZE to add some zip to the event.  It’s called the Winnsboro Merchants Shopping Cart Drill Team.  And it’s hilarious fun to watch.  There’s a video on the Art & Espresso facebook page.

Winnsboro Center for the Arts typically ties in with a special art-related event as well.

While the women indulge in a shopping frenzy, the men can relax at Art and Espresso, the coffee shop that’s the social center of downtown.  Or they can settle into the cool of Brewbaker’s Pub where they can watch televised sports.  There are also great Ribs and BBQ at CiboBQ for lunch.  Plan to have dinner at Double C Steakhouse or Cibo Vino Italian Restaurant.

3rd Friday and CRAZE DAZE is planned as a monthly event year-round.  If you sign up for the free Weekend Planner at the site, you will also receive the monthly mailing that details the CRAZY DAZE offers.

Winnsboro Shopping Cart Drill Team Debut!

Anita Williams - Friday, May 28, 2010
I warned you that our merchants will get a little nuts when it comes to creating some fun downtown. And now I have proof positive in the video Stephen Marshall shot which is posted at facebook on several personal pages!

Follow the link and see if you can keep from smiling!

The merchants participating included Art and Espresso, CopperLeaf Spa, The Leaves apartments, Jeb Sales, and Brewbaker's Restaurant and Pub.

And yes, they'll be back again for the monthly 3rd Friday Art Festival Event, June 18-19 as part of the Crazy Daze promotion.  (Crazy Daze will be Thursday-Saturday.)

Singing in the summer of 2010

Anita Williams - Sunday, May 23, 2010
I was just working on the calendar and realized we have some truly great performances coming up in the next few weeks that are in addition to the day-long Northeast Texas Music Festival

First, on May 29, Stan Narramore will be performing classic rock at Art & Espresso from 7 - 9 pm.  You'll be just in time to get one of Marilyn's famous desserts, Blue Bell ice cream and her May specials made with strawberries.

Then on June 5, Ronny Cox returns to the stage at Crossroads - now at the Winnsboro Center for the Arts - with his signature laid-back style, songs and story-telling.  He may be a star of television and film - frequently playing the villain - but onstage he's just himself.  Engaging, personable and a first-class performer.

Live Poets Society reading at the Winnsboro Center for the Arts

Anita Williams - Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Poetry is alive and well in Winnsboro.  A talented group of writers get together to share their poetry at Winnsboro Center for the Arts.

They will be reading poetry at the WCA right after the close of the Student Art Show.  If you're attending the reception after the Art Show, you're invited to stay for the poetry.

Joe Dan Boyd sent me this to share with you. . .

. . .this group first gathered on March 19 at Winnsboro Center For The Arts (WCA), with each attendee instructed to bring a single poem, preferably a recent creation, for reading before the group and to discuss a mission statement.

Those attending the first meeting: Bonnie Sir Kegian-White, Liz Soutendiijk, Joe Dan Boyd, Karen Jerome, Johnnie Jerome, Angela Wylie, and Lucy Germany. If you’d like to attend the next meeting, scheduled for April 16, also at WCA, bring a poem to read and a favorite book, preferably on poetry, as recommended reading for the group.
