Hallo Friends of Animals.

Ms. Nina asked me to remind you we have a lot of really nice, sweet kittens and cats at the Animal Shelter. There's even a Blue Russian who could be a very nice pet for you or someone you love.  (Not as purdy as me, of course, but a really nice cat.)

We have lots of kittens, cat, puppies and dogs just waiting for someone to love.

Also, with the holidays coming up, we're going to need some foster Mommies and Daddies to care for some animals in their homes for a few days at a time.  Plus, we always need food, treats and toys for the pets waiting for their new families. . . this year more than ever.

We rely on our human friends to help our furry friends. I hope your heart is soft for animals just wanting a home of their own.

On Saturday, October 29 at 2 pm the historic marker at the Winnsboro Livestock Auction and Dairy Sale on east Hwy. 11 will be dedicated.

The Preservation League, an arm of the city, will be making the dedication.

The late J.D. Jones, husband of Mayor Carolyn Jones, was in this business for 31 years.

The ceremony is the same day as the annual Autumn Trails Livestock Show to be held at City Park on Saturday.

This update on the 3rd Friday Arts Festival and the Friday Night Art Walk from Sandy Page, Director of the Winnsboro Cultural Arts District. . .

Friday evening from 6 - 9 pm, the 3^rd Friday Art Walk  keeps a “fresh face” and moves forward as it continues to feature new artwork from local artists. 

The Keyring Gallery will have an “Opening Night” reception and serve as the base for the Winnsboro Art District’s monthly Art Walk.    Many downtown merchants will be open for an evening of art, music, refreshments, sales, and festivities.

Sherry Callender is showing new images with her amazing drawings. . . John Wayne walks tall during “Autumn Trails.” 

A composite of “Lonesome Dove” scenes brings more Western flavor to the gallery.  Another composite drawing features Steve McQueen and “movie takes”..Sherry’s artwork “dances” with Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers.

Bobbye Koncak has new abstract work featured at the Gallery.  Realism is conveyed, with an exciting color palette, in her images of water lilies.  This watercolorist brings not only stellar execution to her artwork, but an amazing ability to convey a depth of color rarely seen in watercolors.

Ellie Taylor has many new expressions of her impressionism.  Familiar scenes of everyday life take on new dimensions as she depicts quick takes in an energetic and exciting style.  Whether it is a “Cloudy Morning”, a “Retreat to the Mountains” or “Home at Last,” the viewer quickly arrives there.

Paula Renee Ridgeway’s realism reaches out and brings home the beauty of birds, or equally, the power of human emotions.  Charles Conner’s photography shows a central focus of serene balance and a centrality that portrays beauty in the natural world.  The work highlights the simple, but important, role of form in portraying an artist’s message. 

Barbara Sudik brings a varied and colorful style to the exhibition.   Scenes form a travelogue for the viewer, whether it be a European visit or a trip to the rodeo.    The colorful masks of Craig Royer delight as they contrast with the carved, sculptural beauty of his chairs.

View the organic sculpture and the exquisite hand tinted photographs of Bonnie Sir Kegian.  Efton Edwards presents serene beauty contrasting with an edgy air of mystery.  Bart Soutendijk’s wire sculptures contrast the medium of wire as it moves to form soft organic forms.  Many more artists are featured in this new Artists’ Exhibition.

The Winnsboro Emporium will have their “Live Poets Society” meeting at 6 pm during the Friday evening Art Walk. 

Other Art Walk Stops include Liefie , SayADream Studio, Beauweevils, Main Street Antiques & Collectibles. Silhouette Dressmaking, & Jan’s Antiques.  Art & Espresso will feature classical guitarist Brent Bassham (7 – 9 pm). You'll find art, refreshments and wine at select locations.

Jonan Brown Williams was a beloved Winnsboro resident who, despite disability, produced paintings, writings and memorabilia.  The Winnsboro Center for the Arts has an exhibit of her work this month.

There will be a special reception on Saturday, October 22, from 2 pm - 5 pm. Jonan's daughter and family present.

Her art is for sale and some of her literary works will be read at the event.

Jonan's class of '49 will meet at WCA to begin their 62nd reunion, the 22nd being the date of the all-school reunion.

Sandy Page has organized a meeting for representatives of Winnsboro organizations.  Below is the information about the purpose of the meeting, as well as scheduling and location. . .

We have many caring and giving organizations in Winnsboro.  Some are formal “not-for profits”, some are civic, some religious, and some social service.  All have one thing in common:  concern and action for the betterment of Winnsboro and its citizens.

Working together, these approximately 60 organizations and over 40 churches could easily broaden their positive impact even further.  Some of us already have associations and affiliations with one another, but it seems we might take that a step further.  All of us are very busy people and we do not need another weekly, or even monthly, meeting.  

What we do need is a shared “clearing house” as to what is occurring and “on the calendar” in Winnsboro.  With this shared information, we could work together with an ever increasing scope of action, and at a lower cost to each organization.

I am proposing that we each register our City “events”, along with a simple statement of our organizational “mission” and that we share that information with one another.  By banding together at certain event times, publicity can be increased, larger crowds can be attracted and more of our local talents can be facilitated. 

Sharing does not mean that we lose our individual goals, our individual “flavor” or individual success.  It does mean we retain our individual “story boards” with ever increasing successes, while further adding to the benefits for all in our city of Winnsboro.   

Getting to personally know one another does increase our chances of success.  Meeting once a quarter seems like a good start.  This first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 12th (2nd Wednesday), at 11:00am at the Depot (Conference Room-East end). 

Bring some key events for your organization, a short “mission” statement and most importantly, your ideas for our working together for Winnsboro.  Let’s put the WOW in Winnsboro Organizations Working Together!

Drought.  Not a word you want to hear, especially by your local weatherman.  It affects almost every facet of our lives, whether we live in farm and ranch country or in the city.

We rely on our agriculture to provide food, clothing, and shelter for our basic needs and that requires water.

Water that can be drawn from wells and water stored in reservoirs, lakes, and ponds as well as rivers and streams.

We are in one of the most extreme droughts in modern times.  This drought has set the stage for wildfires, crop and livestock losses, and economic disaster.

We are looking for ways to minimize use of our water resources, and conserve what we have stored in case the weatherman is right and this continues another 12-14 months.

One thing we, as landowners, can do is maintain our existing water supplies by cleaning out our ponds.

We can clean out and deepen the ponds and lakes to hold more water, eliminate the silt and vegetation that restrict the flow of springs and creeks, and allow access to the water sources by wildlife, livestock, and people.

Cleaning out the pond or lake can also reduce the amount of nuisance plants without resorting to chemicals that might harm aquatic life or livestock.

It can also remove brush and trees from dams, the roots of which pose a real threat to the stability of the dam.

Pond cleaning is an effective, cost efficient way to maximize your water supply without having to build another pond, dig another well, or rely on a community water supply for your agricultural needs.
